Stone has been used in Scottish building throughout history. Across Scotland there is a diverse range of geology and this is reflected in the colours and textures seen in buildings and dykes past and present.

With the development of the construction industry, stone as a building material slowly became more redundant and often used in an inappropriate manner.

However, stone buildings and drystone dykes still have a huge impact on our habitat and environment. These like many structures need careful, sensitive repair and restoration using traditional materials and techniques. With the correct approach and selection of material, stone can still be used very effectively today.
